March Team of the Month: Kennedy Catholic Golden Eagles Boys Basketball

Gilbert’s is proud to honor a PIAA State Champion as our Team of the Month for the second month in a row! Led by Coach Rick Mancino, Kennedy Catholic started off their historic month of March by defeating Jamestown for the Class A District 10 Basketball Championship.

The following weekend started the “Road to Hershey” as Kennedy Catholic opened the PIAA A Tournament with a 73-26 victory over District 7 opponent Propel Andrew Street. The Golden Eagle followed that performance with another 73 point outing against another District 7 opponent.  This time they defeated the District 7 Runner-Up Union Scotties by a score of 73-37.

In the PIAA Quarterfinals, Kennedy Catholic traveled to Baldwin High School in Pittsburgh to square off against District 5 Runner-Up Shanksville-Stonycreek (located about 10 miles east of Somerset). The Golden Eagles’ 24 point victory turned out to be their smallest margin of victory in the entire tournament.

The 77-53 win earned KCHS a trip to the Western Finals against District 6 Champion Bishop Carroll, who proved to be no match for the locals as Kennedy Catholic steamrolled into the state championship game via a 77-30 domination of the Huskies.

Kennedy Catholic finished their quest for a state championship by defeating District 4 Champion Lourdes Regional by a score of 78-36. The Golden Eagles built a huge lead early by outscoring Lourdes Regional 30-0 in the first quarter.

The Golden Eagles used a starting lineup of Manis Norman, Maceo Austin, Mattia Acunzo, Ben Taylor, and Oscar Tshiebwe during their state championship run. They also used key reserves Ike Herster, Helon Amos, and Sonny Mancino.

Congratulation to our March Team of the Month… the Kennedy Catholic Golden Eagles Boys Basketball Team!
