Is your firm at risk? If you collect and maintain data, yes; if you are a financial or a health care organization, yes; if you conduct financial transactions, yes; if you store health records, credit cards, or other personally identifiable information, yes; if you are a retailer or an educational institution, yes; if you maintain employee data electronically, yes. In other words, pretty much every business is vulnerable, although some are more attractive targets to criminals than others.
One myth is that most problems occur due to hacking and outside malicious attacks, but all too often, the threat is coming from “inside the house.” Many problems begin with employee mistakes, lost or misplaced equipment, and a failure to take basic safety measures. Another myth is that your current insurance policies would protect you in the event of an attack. While your current business coverage may address some costs, there are many costs that would be excluded. See the sidebar for potential exposures.
