June is National Safety Month—a perfect time for businesses to review and strengthen their workplace safety efforts. We work with businesses every day to help them manage workplace safety risks, protect employees, and build safer work environments. Take note of a few key steps to help manage workplace safety risks effectively:
Identify the Risks
Start with a thorough risk assessment. Look at physical hazards, repetitive motion injuries, chemical exposure, and even stress-related factors. Walk through your workplace, gather employee feedback, and keep an eye out for anything that could cause harm.
Put Safety Procedures in Place
Once you’ve identified the risks, it’s time to act. Make sure your workplace has:
- Regular safety training for all employees
- Proper protective equipment (PPE) and clear signage
- Emergency plans for fires, injuries, and severe weather
- Regular assessments of the workplace to identify potential hazards
Build a Safety-First Culture
Safety shouldn’t be a one-time conversation. Encourage employees to report hazards and participate in safety committees. Recognize those who go above and beyond to keep others safe. And most importantly, lead by example—when leadership prioritizes safety, others will follow.
Review and Improve
Safety is not a “set it and forget it” effort. Review your policies regularly, update training as needed, and make improvements based on incident reports or changing conditions.
