State of the Insurance Market

State of the Insurance Market – Q1 2025

Staying informed about the latest trends and demands of the Commercial Business Insurance Industry is essential. Below is a summary of the State of the Insurance Market – Q1 2025:

Commercial Property premiums are a continued challenge. Ensuring your business is adequately insured is key.

Premiums across all account sizes rose for the 30th consecutive quarter, averaging a 4.2% increase, although lower than the previous quarter’s increase of 5.4%. Medium-sized businesses saw the highest average premium increase at 3.7% in Q1—a 42% drop from Q4’s 6.4% increase. Large accounts increased an average of 5.3%, and small accounts remained at an average increase of 3.6%.

Notable Line of Business for the following coverages:

Commercial Auto: Commercial auto saw the highest average premium increase amongst all lines this quarter, at an average of 10.4%. This marks the 54th consecutive quarter of rising premiums in this line. Driver shortages, rising repair costs, and lingering supply chain disruptions have all contributed to more frequent and severe claims. For more details on contributing factors, see additional information from Travelers here.

Umbrella Insurance: Closely following commercial auto, umbrella premiums climbed 9.5% this quarter. These policies offer critical excess liability protection, and the increased severity of claims is contributing to growing demand and cost.

Respondents identified third-party litigation funding as one of the factors contributing to the increase in both lines of business.
